Welcome once more to the Blog from St. Boniface’s Catholic College.
There has been an awful lot happening recently so I wish to just take a few moments to update you.
Year 7 - a message from Head of Year, Miss Beales
Some fantastic Head of Year Awards given out in this week’s assembly. Many students received a “Star Student” bookmark and some special awards of a nice Head of Year Award Pen. Special mention to the Year 7 rugby team who took part in the Cunningham Cup Rugby Festival and came 3rd out of 9 groups! Some excellent rewards for hard work and effort to year 7 students from the RE department, well done! Last Thursday Mr. Tew took 7T pupils to Plympton Power Station at Langage. They had a great time in the Discovery centre. They had a tour of the Power Station, saw the control room and tried to generate electricity on bikes. They were impeccable in their behaviour and a credit to the College. They also loved the chocolate biscuits served to them and the goody bag!
This week we have 7B presenting their assembly and we are all looking forward to that!

Year 9 - a message from Head of Year, Mr. Scott
Several Year 9 students have been working in the school kitchen over the past two weeks – working alongside Sodexo Head Chef Tony Wade (of Come Dine with Me fame!) to produce some wonderful meals for our staff and students. The boys have really engaged in the opportunity, so it will continue for the foreseeable future. A big thank you to the canteen staff for their patience! To celebrate Pi Day, students made some Pi cookies, Mississippi Mud Pie and Key Lime Pie – to help raise funds for CAFOD. In assembly this week, Mr Smart’s year challenge was for 5 students to remember Pi to as many places as possible. We were in awe at Kirsten’s ability to recall it to FORTY decimal places! Amazing! He won some Mini Eggs for his effort! We’re all very excited about next term’s countdown to GCSEs, CEW and Flambards! Lots more to come! Well done Year 9!
Year 10 - a message from Head of Year, Mr. Redfern
Work Experience deadline is Friday 22nd March 2013, ready for May 20 -24. Please can all Year 10s have their placement details along with all completed paperwork with Mrs Hudson before this date.
Year 10 have also had their first external examinations in Chemistry and Physics, Mrs. Gimblett – the examinations officer, has praised the boys for their excellent attitude and conduct throughout the exams and the feeling amongst the teachers was that the general attitude of the boys in preparing for the exams was excellent.
Year 11 – a message from the Head of Year, Mr. Tucker
Congratulations to all those in the year who did very well in their recent English exam. Going in the right direction! Please encourage those who are just a small step away from their target grade to continue to stick with it and to take every opportunity to improve.
Please also congratulate the Year group on their attitude and approach in their recent Maths exams. The external invigilators were very impressed with their maturity and behaviour.
Post 16
Mr Tew and the sixth form team took excess of 40 post 16 students to the higher education fair at the Westpoint Arena in Exeter last week. They attended seminars and gathered all info from all the universities in the country who were represented at the event. The place was packed with prospective university students. Much was gained by all. The students were a credit to the College. It has given many a realistic goal to aim for, with a lot of hard work studying, they can be the best...
Our AS and A2 Physical Education students have performed exceptionally well in their practical coursework. The AQA moderator visited us on Monday 11th March and confirmed the marks awarded by our PE teachers. At AS, 100% of our students exceeded their target grades and 80% exceeded their target grades by 2 or more grades. Compared with last year’s average mark of 55%, we have seen a huge improvement in results with this year’s cohort achieving an average mark of 81%, considerably higher than the national average of 72%.
At A2, results were also impressive. 100% of students have met or exceeded their target grade, with 5 students achieving an A grade. We are now focusing on revision techniques and literacy skills in the run-up to our exams in May and June with this group..
Last week, National Apprenticeship week, Plymouth City Council were in the College giving a presentation regarding opportunities available within their organisation. Once again it was commented by external visitors to the College that behaviour was “impeccable”.
Thursday 14th March was National Pi day, not the sort we eat but the maths variety! Dr Martin Lavelle from the University of Plymouth conducted a talk in the hall about Mathematics to students from all years, involving some links to Pi, and potential options for pupils thinking about taking maths post-16 and post-18. During the day pupils from each year group were involved in ‘Pi’ related activities in the maths department including Pi recital competitions and other general geekiness. School finished at 3.14, pi!

| Holding our lives before God. Jesus arrested, judged, found guilty and condemned to die is held captive overnight. If I were arrested and held this night what would I be found guilty of? That I made friends with people irrespective of their colour, creed or class…. That I shared my bread with the poor…. That my words… and actions… brought healing and forgiveness…. That I made justice and didn’t count the cost …. That I sought the truth and then spoke of it…. That I recognised my neighbour and loved them as my very self… That I met God along the way in the healing and forgiveness I received…. That I accepted hospitality at many different tables…. That I was changed by the lives of others…. …. and often repented my arrogance and foolishness in encountering their wisdom … That friends and strangers sometimes paid the price for me…. That I never sought out suffering….. ….. but journeyed with it to the best of my ability…. That the love of those about me taught me to love myself before God …. You call us out of brokenness to mend and remake your creation. Grant us the courage to stay with all those who are held captive this night. In the name of Jesus who is good news, Amen |
