St. Boniface's College Headteachers Blog

Week A

Welcome everyone to this week’s Blog.

This week saw the Year 8 retreat, led by the RE department on reconciliation. When I popped into the classes there was some great work being done on the Stations of the Cross. The pupils were all really involved and were producing some lovely work. Well done to all staff and pupils for making it such a lovely day – there was a super feeling in the department.

I was very pleased that even with the recent NUT strike day we were able to keep all classes across the whole college running as normal. Thanks to all those involved in making this happen

Year 11 examinations are some 18 school days away – lessons will continue as normal all the way up to each exam ie.  no exam leave as such. This works by ensuring all pupils attend lessons in each subject as per their normal timetable, once they have finished all exams in that subject area they no longer need to turn up to that lesson – so for example Geography, all lessons as normal until students have sat their examination in Geography then they can use the time that they would normally have had geography lessons to revise/prepare for their other exams. Sounds complicated but the boys pick it up very quickly.

A reminder that there is the Year 8 Parent/Teacher evening this coming Tuesday April 1st. I hope you are able to take advantage of this opportunity to talk with your sons teachers but please do remember that teachers can be contacted via their e-mail address at any time. As I write this our Year 8 Rugby team is taking part in the Devon Finals so I eagerly await the outcome. Good Luck lads I hope you have enjoyed the day.

I intend to encourage all parents to embrace the modern technology now available to the College by sending home the Easter Newsletter via e-mail. This considerably cuts down on photocopying costs and saves valuable resources for other areas. I am also hoping that the report from the recent Ofsted monitoring visit will also be available then – again I am looking to use our e-mail system to send a copy to you.

Monday morning sees our Year 10 Retreat taking place, I hope it turns out to be as good as Years 7 and 8.

 Duke of Edinburgh

Mr Claricoates is running a Duke of Edinburgh open evening on Wednesday 23rd April starting at 6pm. The evening is open to all year 9, 10, 11 and 12 students.

The aim will be to introduce the DofE to parents, explain what it is and how it works and how they can support their son’s.

For year 9 parents and students and year 11 parents and students this will be an information only evening and I hope to “plant the seed” for next year.

If there are any question please let Mr Claricoates know.

With the Easter break almost upon us just a reminder that College will be as normal on Friday 4th April and we finish at 3.20 as normal.

Have a wonderful week.

Mr Davies

Year 7

With only one week to go until our Easter break, Year 7 are full of excitement of who will win the Kindle for the 100 merit club! Any student that has received 100 merits since the start of the academic year in September, will be in the prize draw! It’s very exciting!

The year 7 assembly this week was presented by Mr Ramage and was about knowing how to succeed. I personally really enjoy Mr Ramage’s assemblies as there is usually a motorsport link, something we are both very passionate about! This week, we were consumed with the passion and sheer determination behind Ayrton Senna’s story of success. Ayrton Senna is a hero of mine and sadly passed away when I was in year 7 at school. I explained to the students how his complete determination to find out how succeed and consistent practice made him possibly the best Formula 1 driver in history. Thank you to Mr Ramage for once again providing us with such an inspiring assembly. We very much look forward to 7V’s assembly next week.

To continue the extremely high standards that Year 7 demonstrate, please can I ask parents to make a note of the following;

·         Students should adhere to the hair and uniform requirements at all times. Please ensure that the correct outer wear garments are being used (particularly with the adverse weather conditions currently). Students should only be wearing black or navy blue coats, thank you.

·         Mobile phones should not be on during the school day. They should be switched off and in bags so that learning is not disturbed.

·         Home learning should be completed for all subjects in a timely manner. Please can parents insist on checking planners and guiding the students with organisation.

·         Please can parents ensure their son has a reading book in his bag every day to support our reading scheme. This is to further help and improve literacy standards whereby all students will undertake 30 minutes of silent reading each day.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend,

Miss Beales

Year 8

Congratulations to Toby M. who successfully completed his mini-triathlon last Saturday in aid of Sport Relief. In doing so he raised several hundred pounds! Great to see a young lad getting out there and showing initiative to help others not so well off as himself.

As I write this the Year 8 rugby squad will be eagerly anticipating the day in Exeter where they are competing in the finals of their rugby competition, having finished runners-up recently in the West Devon event. Good luck to them and Mr Weaver!

The boys had their Retreat Day on Wednesday and were heaped with praise from Miss Heduvan and Mr McCormick for the way in which they immersed themselves in the day. It was brilliant to hear how well they had done! Thanks to all the staff who put in such hard work in preparing for, and running the day.

Well done to Robbie M. who was nominated for Student of the Week in Year 8 this week. Robbie has gained 153 merits this year and heads the table in his tutor group.

With the first parent-teacher evening on Tuesday evening for the boys, I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible.

Mr. Tucker

Year 9

After last week’s frenetic events, this week has returned to a more tranquil, but none the less productive a pace in terms of teaching and learning.

The week again started off with our weekly assembly, a time for prayer and reflection, this week it was again led by Mr Ramage on the topic of learning, and striving to be the best you can be with a good example being Ayrton Senna.

The new behavioural system which was introduced in the new year has been having a significant effect in terms of behaviour management and its effect on teaching and learning, as well as drawing attention to any students continually causing low level disruption it has seen the awarding of merits increasing. Several students have received in excess of 100 and as a result will be entered into a draw this side of Easter to try and win a Kindle.

Thanks this week go to Matthew J. and I am told his dad, who spearheaded a great fund raising event last week for CAFOD raising over £74, and I hear 9T have a cake sale as I write, so more good news next week.

Finally this week, Good luck to Gabriel 9V who is competing in the British Cycling National Cross Country MTB Series Round 1 in Braintree Essex on Sunday 30th March, all being well we may have some more news next week. Until then………

Have a good week.

Mrs Mcloughlin

Year 10

This summer, David K. will represent his City as a ‘Summer Mix Ambassador’.  Last week he took part in a training weekend, and we were pleased to hear about David’s successful induction.  Well done!

Thank you to Mr Ramage who led us in an inspiring assembly this week, featuring a fascinating video about the life Ayrton Senna and the extraordinary influence he had on so many.

We had a refreshing reminder about the speed at which time appears to travel between now and the end of Year 11.  This time next year, your son will be in the final days of his GCSE courses… planning ahead is essential and taking part in interventions will benefit him in the long run.

A recent meeting with my Head of Year Prefects raised some concerns about ‘low level disruption’ in some lessons.  This was tackled immediately with the students involved and procedures put in place to monitor their conduct in lessons to minimise any further disruption to this important year.

Mr Scott

Year 11

In preparation for the summer examinations, which are nearly upon us, maths, English and RE will be setting an extra mock examination on Monday and Tuesday, next week.  The results from these papers will provide an excellent benchmark of your son’s is progress towards his final external examinations in May.  Having another opportunity of sitting a formal mock examination will provide your son with a further chance to acclimatise to the strict rules and regulations that prevail when sitting a formal external examination.   An added benefit of this will be that it may help to concentrate his mind just that little bit more on how important it is to prepare well for his examinations.  Please continue to encourage your son to attend as many intervention classes as possible.  I’ve attached the intervention timetable below for your convenience.

The examination period is a stressful time for all concerned, especially your son.  It goes without saying that we all should be vigilant in monitoring all the boys’ well-being for any signs that they may not be coping and that they require some extra support.   Feel free to contact your son’s teachers or mentor, if you have any concerns about his health, at any time.  We are here to support both you and your son to ensure he maximises his potential.

Post 16

Another busy week in the Sixth Form.  Alaistair represented the College in London on behalf of CAFOD. He did an excellent job and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. CAFOD is a unique charity well supported by the Sixth Form.

A great deal of thanks must go to Bob our Minibus Driver. Bob is going to pastures new and leaving our students. He has been an honorary member of the sixth form helping many students achieve their qualifications by getting them to the right places every week. Bob always enjoys the banter with the sixth form especially as Manchester United are now losing. The students will miss his willingness to always collect them or go out on extra trips when they are late. The vocational students especially where he has acted like a father figure to many, but always treating them with  respect. The sixth form will miss him, as he also mends the toilet lock every week.

Students are busy revising and are under stress with the time fast approaching but they are well prepared. Teachers are holding revision sessions and intervention sessions. Pastoral periods are used for revision. Mindfull.com can offer them advice and guidance if things become too daunting. Some stress and anxiety is good and natural. It is when it affects normal life. If you have any issues then please contact me at stew@stbonifaces.com. The sixth form family tries to support all.

Mr Tew

Lord Jesus, at our baptism we were marked for you with the Sign of the Cross. May your cross inspire us to act justly and love tenderly. May the crosses in our lives be for us invitations for growth and new life as we place our trust in you. Renewed by your love, may the way we live proclaim you as Lord: you who are the Way, the Truth and the Life.

Amen
