St Boniface's Catholic College Headteachers Blog for wb10.2.14

Week A

Welcome to my Blog for the week beginning 10th February.

All at the College have been quietly going about their business over this past week. With now less than 10 school weeks left before the GCSE examinations begin there is a buzz around the College – pupils coming up to me to let me know how well they are doing in tests and pieces of controlled assessments. I am sure that once the rain stops spring will burst upon us and invariably academic concerns go up a notch with all exam classes. Getting the strong foundations in place now is sure to help come the exam season. The GCE and GCSE exam timetables are found towards the end of this blog as per last week.

I am expecting our second planned monitoring visit from Ofsted sometime in March. As I am sure you will appreciate the report is never far from my thought and we are all eager to demonstrate the significant improvement from the last full inspection.  The visit is due to last a day, unlike the normal full two day inspections, and is aimed at looking specifically at the areas of improvement signposted in the full inspection. I receive a phone call in the afternoon and Ofsted arrive the following morning.

I am looking forward to our Year 7 Parent /Teacher evening on 11th February where I hope I will have an opportunity to speak with many of our newest parents – please do approach me if you want to talk about anything related to the College – I promise I won’t bite!

Miss Gosling and Mrs Wills have approached me today beaming. One of our Year 7 students, Adam H. handed in his project from home learning:

“The task for the home learning was to…

Create a piece of art work from the medium of toilet rolls and colour.”

Fantastic work Adam, well done and a letter will be winging its way home for your parents as well.

Have a good week everyone and thanks for your continued support.

Mr. Davies

RHINE TRIP – YEAR 7-8 – MAY HALF TERM

Each year, the College leads a trip to Germany to visit the Rhine region and take part in various activities.  This year’s Rhine trip will take place during the May half term holiday.  Please read the details below and decide if you would like your son to take part.  Places are limited to 41.

The four staff members on the trip are – Mr Scott, Miss McFarland, Mrs Machin and Miss Sanford.

SUNDAY MAY 25th – TRAVELLING TO GERMANY

Leaving Boniface Lane at midnight, the group will travel across the UK to Dover, boarding the 7.30am ferry to Dover.  Whilst on board the children can explore the ship and the entertainment/refreshments.  On arrival in France, we set off across and into Belgium, where we often stop for a drink and Belgian waffle before our final trip across Germany to the picturesque village of Rhens.  We stay at the Hotel Roter Ochse where students are assigned to comfortable rooms to share with other students from St Boniface’s.  The group will then have a tour of the village and have a walk along the river Rhine before having an evening meal at the hotel.

MONDAY MAY 26th – KOBLENZ & BOPPARD

Breakfast at the hotel, coach transfer to the local town of Boppard to visit a vineyard and take part in a wine-tasting, before heading off to some shops in the town and boarding the KD-line river boat for a trip down river to the city of Koblenz to see some tourist sites and engage in German culture.  In the late afternoon we head to a German swimming pool – usually outdoors if it is hot, before heading back to the hotel for our evening meal.

TUESDAY MAY 27th – PHANTASIALAND

On Tuesday we’ll have breakfast at the hotel and head to Phantasialand – a very popular German theme park (similar to Alton Towers).  Once in, the rides are all free… and lots of fun.  Following the day at the park, we cool down at the swimming pool again and head back for our evening meal.

WEDNESDAY MAY 28th – COLOGNE

Following breakfast at the hotel, we head off on the road to Cologne (Koln) to see the impressive cathedral, then on to a tour at Bayer Leverkkusen’s BayArena stadium, and a trip to the Lindt chocolate factory!

We usually try to fit ‘go-karting’ in to the day too – but it is not included in the cost.  If students wish to take part, it is about €15pp.

THURSDAY MAY 29th – TRAVELLING HOME TO PLYMOUTH

Breakfast at the hotel, then we start our return journey to the UK… arriving back sometime around midnight (depending on the M25 traffic!)…

The cost of the trip is £365 per pupil payment schedule for the trip is as follows, and includes all travel (coach, ferry, boat), travel insurance, hotel accommodation, breakfast, lunch and evening meals, entrance fees for everything except go-karting.

DATE  AMOUNT DUE

February 14th               £65 non-refundable deposit

March 7th                    £100

April 4th                       £100

Year 7

It’s hard to believe that we are heading rapidly towards Spring with the weather we have been experiencing over the past couple of weeks! I hope everyone has managed to survive without too much disruption to home life.

We have only one week left of term and have so many successes to celebrate. We have over 500 entries onto SIMS since January 6th, lots of subject awards and merits being handed out, and outside of school many of our year 7 students are taking part in some great opportunities. What a fantastic achievement! Well done to all those who have been putting in so much hard work and effort. Please use your SIMS Learning Gateway log in to see how your son is performing in school, it is a live system that has positive and negative events updated instantly. I very much look forward to the final assembly of the term, where I am able to hand out many certificates and awards!

This week’s assembly was on the theme of the never giving up and perseverance. Mr Ramage and Dr Summers led the assembly and gave us lots of thought provoking quotes and stories. Two very poignant quotes from Henry Ford were, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right” and secondly my favourite, “Failure is simply an opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently”. I personally know that sometimes it’s hard to persevere when you feel that you are struggling in something and we all definitely had some time to reflect on this. Many thanks to both Mr Ramage and Dr Summers for this lovely assembly.

I was so incredibly proud to be able to accompany Miss Gosling on her art trip to the Plymouth Aquarium last Friday. Mr Davies received a lovely email from the artist who taught one of the workshops on the day. She spoke of St Boniface year 7 students with such admiration of what a lovely year group they were, so keen and interested whist behaving themselves impeccably. Well done boys, I couldn’t have been more proud to be your Head of Year. A huge thank you to Miss Gosling for organising such a wonderful trip.

A very important date for your diary;

·         Tuesday 11th February 2014 - Year 7 Parents Evening starting at 3.30pm. A great opportunity for you to meet with your son’s subject teachers to discuss their progression by subject. Please ask your son to make appointments with his subject teachers. If you would like an appointment with me as Head of Year, this is of course not a problem, however I will prioritise my time on the evening for my teaching classes.

To ensure the extremely high standards that Year 7 continue to demonstrate, please can I ask parents to make a note of the following;

·         Students should adhere to the hair and uniform requirements at all times. Please ensure that the correct outer wear garments are being used (particularly with the adverse weather conditions currently). Students should only be wearing black or navy blue coats, thank you.

·         Mobile phones should not be on during the school day. They should be switched off and in bags so that learning is not disturbed.

·         Home learning should be completed for all subjects in a timely manner. Please can parents insist on checking planners and guiding the students with organisation.

·         Please can parents ensure their son has a reading book in his bag every day to support our reading scheme. This is to further help and improve literacy standards whereby all students will undertake 30 minutes of silent reading each day.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and survive the terrible weather!

Miss Beales – Head of Year 7

Year 8

Thanks to Mr Lord for his thought-provoking assembly last week. Not a mention of a surfboard either! I’ve got to apologise to the boys who were awarded certificates because I forgot to record their names! They know who they are, so well done to them on their achievement.

Many congratulations to the Year 8 students who successfully entered ‘A Twist in the Tail’ competition through the English department. Apparently some of the entries were so good they’re getting published!

Well done to John-Joe K., Zak G., Josh R., Eddie S. and Dayne P. who all successfully completed a day’s rugby training with Exeter Chiefs last week through the Devon School of Rugby. All had a very enjoyable day by all accounts!

Finally, Josh R., as well as being an accomplished rugby player also takes great credit for coming third in the Great Britain Ultimate Frisbee competition held in Wolverhampton recently. His expertise will come in very useful in the PE department during the summer!

Well done to all who continue to display a fantastic approach to school life!

Mr. Tucker

Year 9

A quiet week for year 9 this week in terms of extra-curricular activities, however, a lot of good learning going on in classrooms.  Teachers have been beavering away inputting grades for the latest academic report which will be with you all soon; this will be followed up with the next academic mentoring day on Friday 28th February

This is an opportunity to meet your son's mentor and gather first-hand information about his academic progress, strengths and areas for improvement. You may also wish to discuss the short term targets that have been agreed between your son and his mentor, based on the mentor meetings and the data generated from the recent Blue Card reports as well as to discuss the Blue Card itself.

Letters for making appointments should be with you soon via your son or e-mail, however, if you want to contact his mentor sooner here are a list of the Year 9 Mentors:

Appointments generally run throughout the day to suit your working hours, I am available from 7-30 am to meet my mentees if they wish to contact me to make an appointment.
On another topic I have started to notice a small number of students starting to wear black jeans to school, can I just say these are not school uniform and are not acceptable, students are aware of the school dress code and if they continue to flout the rules they will be facing the consequences.

On a more positive note good luck to the year 9 football team playing at Plymstock tonight and congratulations to Billy on his participation in the Plymouth Indoor Rowing Championships .
Have a good week and don’t get blown away.

Mrs Mcloughlin

Head of Year 9

YEAR 10

We were led in a deeply spiritual assembly this week by Mr Ramage and Dr Summers, and led in prayer by Fr John.  The year group as always respected the importance of coming together as a community and thinking through their pastoral development at the College.

Lots of good learning going on in classes – with positive feedback from ICT, Art and Computer Science.

Mentoring Day is fast approaching on Friday February 28th. Please contact your son’s mentor via email to make an appointment. If you’re unable to meet on that day, please try and make alternative time to meet. Your son’s mentor email addresses are as follows:

Dr Summers – asummers@stbonifaces.com

Mrs Hewlins – rhewlins@stbonifaces.com

Mrs Rogers – crogers@stbonifaces.com

Mr Ramage – rramage@stbonifaces.com

Mr Ousey – dousey@stbonifaces.com

Mr Tucker – dtucker@stbonifaces.com

Mr Scott

Year 11

A Letter inviting you to mentoring day on Friday 28th February 2014,will be sent to you via e-mail next week.  This will be a great opportunity for you to gather first-hand   information about your son’s progress and how the interventions are impacting on his preparation for his examinations.  There is increasing evidence that the interventions are having an impact. I received a very positive e-mail from Miss Heduvan, our RE teacher who wanted to let me know that Rhys, and both Lewis M’s and Lewis E’s grades in RE have significantly improved recently and that she fully believes that this is a direct impact of the RE interventions that they attend each Friday. Ben and Andrew have also attended assessment preparation revision sessions and both have achieved very highly this term. Credit where credit is due to all five pupils!

A number of boys are regularly attending interventions and seeing the same impact on their progress, but we still need you, as a parent or carer, to encourage your son to attend as often as possible, a wide range of intervention classes please.

It has finally arrived! The anticipation is building. Your son’s individual GCSE timetable has now been finalised and will be available for your son to pick up from his tutor on Monday. Your son will need to sign a form that states that he has read and understood all the rules regulations of sitting formal external examinations.  I’d be grateful if you could check that your son does this as it is his ultimate responsibility. He will have a set of rules and regulations attached to his examination entries, but there will also be access to them via the Headmaster blog now and the college web site soon.   Miss Gimblett, our examinations officer, was full of praise of the boys in how they conducted themselves during their recent mock examinations.  All the boys will be reminded however, as part of the code of conduct, that any behaviour that breaches the rules and regulations may result in them being withdrawn from the examination process immediately.

I’m confident that all the boys will be motivated and focussed to do well during all their summer examinations.

Exam information:

Year 11 will be given 2 copies of their individual GCSE Exam timetable on Monday.  Your son will need to check all the details very carefully:- Name, date of birth and all the exam entries. If he is not sure about any of the entries he should talk to his subject teacher or see me.

He will also receive a copy of the JCQ rules which he had already received last year.  Once you have checked all the details with your son he must sign one of the copies to verify that the details are correct and that he has read all of the JCQ rules of Examinations.   He should return the sheet to me, via his tutor, as soon as possible and certainly by Friday 14th February.  Changes which are made after this date may well incur charges.

YOUNG ASKED TO GET IN THE MIX AND VOLUNTEER

Young people are being asked to volunteer to help create a host of activities for other youngsters in Plymouth to enjoy this August as part of Summer Mix 2014.

Plymouth City Council’s Youth Service is recruiting 15 to 19 year olds to become this year’s lucky group of young ambassadors, who will help design, deliver and evaluate the success of Summer Mix. Crucially, ambassadors will help to promote activities to other young people at events across the city and this will include touring different schools to help spread the word.

This is the fifth year Summer Mix will take place in Plymouth offering young people aged 11 to 19 – or 11 to 25 for those with a disability or special learning needs - living in the city the chance to try something new for free during the summer holidays.

Councillor Nicky Williams, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “Summer Mix is highly successful and a really fantastic initiative for young people to get involved with. Ambassadors will have access to free training and trips and they can also gain accreditation to boost their growing CVs. But most importantly becoming an Ambassador is great way to meet new people and have a good time.”

Last year over 3,000 places on 100 different courses were available for young people to choose from and literally hundreds of teenagers from across the city took part.

Young people interested in becoming young ambassadors should email Emma Wright, Senior Youth Support Worker by 19 February closing date at emma.wright@plymouth.gov.uk or call 01752 306595.

The sixth form is about opportunities and making yourself stand out as a unique individual.

Mr Tew

One night I had a dream...

I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord, and
Across the sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand;
One belonged to me, and the other to the Lord.
When the last scene of my life flashed before us,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that many times along the path of my life,
There was only one set of footprints.

I also noticed that it happened at the very lowest
and saddest times in my life
This really bothered me, and I questioned the Lord about it.
"Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you,
You would walk with me all the way;
But I have noticed that during the
most troublesome times in my life,
There is only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why in times when I
needed you the most, you should leave me.

The Lord replied, "My precious, precious
child. I love you, and I would never,
never leave you during your times of
trial and suffering.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you.

Amen
