St. Boniface's Catholic College Blog for week A 28.1.13

If you know of any member of our community who would like access to this blog then could you please direct them to:

It was lovely to meet so many of you last Wednesday 15th Jan at the Year 9 Options evening. I do hope that you found the evening informative and that your son has been able to select the subjects he wants. There has been a slight delay in the co-ordination of returns due to staff illness but I will be looking at them over the next week. If there are any problems we will be in contact.

Thank you for all the hard work in ensuring that your son was able to come to school with the weather being the way it was last week. There was a little disruption due to the snow and ice for about an hour or so but "normal lessons were soon resumed" - caused quite a groan from the boys as I am sure you can imagine.

We have a year 7 cross country runner representing Devon in the South West Championships on the 2nd February in Bristol as a result of last weeks efforts. We wish him luck and very well done!

We have just had delivery of a lot of new games equipment for our year 7 and 8 pupils to use during their break and lunchtimes, many thanks to the post 16 Big Brother team for arranging and overseeing this.

Pupils who catch the bus home from outside the back of the Tamar pub need to be especially caucious at the moment please - the pub is undergoing a redevelopment which has meant that they have needed to block off their car park - some boys are trying to cross the car park as a short cut to get to their bus stop. If your son is one of these could you please work with us to explain the dangers he is taking - there are large holes in the car park and a lot of heavy machinery, as such we have told boys not to enter the blocked off car park but there are still some who are trying. to. Staff members are present at the bus stop but some pupils are running over to beat the staff there!

Could you also remind your son of the need to be careful when near roads please. Some younger boys, whilst waiting for their bus, are pushing each other and this is causing them to step out onto the main road at the Crownhill bus stop. Thanks.

Year 7 on Monday 30th January have a session with a professional violinist who is visiting the College.

St Boniface's has students with a wide range of abilities and talents. We want to ensure that our most able students have high aspirations and have every opportunity to fulfill their potential. Most recently, we are arranging for exceptional Year 9 students to take advantage of the Dux Awards Scheme and attend a Russell Group university for a day ( http://www.russellgroup.ac.uk/our-universities.aspx ) to encourage students to consider top universities and higher education.

The College Chaplain is running a Holocaust Memorial workshop on Monday for pupils.

On the Horizon:

There is a school training day on Friday February 15th, school will be closed for pupils as per the College calender ( found on our website - www.stbonifaces.com )

Mentoring Day is rapidly approaching, Friday March 1st - St. Davids Day (well I am Welsh). Parents can contact teachers at any time and do not have to wait for mentoring day to discuss academic progress if they are at all concerned. Mentors are a first, but not only, port of call. The mentor at the College can also make appointments with teachers directly if you have any concerns. Could I remind all parents also that, on the Tuesday after each mentoring day we have set aside time in the evening for teachers to be available for any parents to have discussions with them regarding any concerns. So in the case of our next mentoring day of March 1st - staff will be available on the evening of Tuesday 5th.  Appointments for this are made on the Mentoring Day by going to the College reception and entering details into a folder, the reception staff are available on the day to help.

Please see below a list of the sporting opportunities available at the College during the week. This cycle is available each week.

God and Father of all people, never let me look down on others or make anyone feel inferior. Show me how to remove any prejudices so that I may appreciate individuals more for who they are. Inspire me to live in such a way that I may discover you in the people I will meet today.
Amen
Have a good week.
