Headteachers Blog

Well here we are – the end of a very busy year and my last Blog as Headteacher of St. Boniface’s College.

Could I take this opportunity to formally thank you as parents for all your support and encouragement over these past 18 months or so – there have been several highs and lows and the many kind words sent and said that have made a huge difference – thank you. Thanks of course also go to the fantastic student body we have here at the College – they may not all be angels but without a shadow of a doubt they are all special and there are many, many angels amongst them. Father John has been a rock and a constant presence over my brief watch and it has been lovely to see him mingling with staff and students. The staff have been very special under significant pressure and have risen to the challenge and I am confident will continue to do so. As with any organisation you are only as good as the people around you and along with the staff I would like to formally thank the Senior Leadership Team here at the College – we have laughed and cried together and had some very interesting debates about the best course forward for the College – I hope that you would agree that we are all in a better place as a College than when we started this journey 18 months ago.

Now enough of that and onto some news. We had a fantastic sports day with Bonnies gold, silver and bronze medals and some great performances. The whole school was involved in the day and we are trying to find a way for parents to be involved next year, at least as spectators but maybe the old egg and spoon dash!!! Thanks to the PE department especially Mr Greenway and Mr James for organising the event. Kiely House ran out as winners, no pun intended. Photos on the College Facebook site – a lovely feel and identity.

On Wednesday we had a BBQ for year 11 and their families, another great event – the staff allowing the year 11 lads to score the odd goal to ensure they enjoyed themselves only…I could hardly move the following day.

The College will be closing in about an hour or so at12.30 and we re-open formally for years7, 10 and 12 at 8.50 on Friday September 5th. The whole school returns on Monday September 8th again at 8.50. Year 12 students are to come into College on Thursday September 4th to register for their courses with Mr. Tew.

We are saying goodbye to Miss Beales – Geography and Head of Year 7, Mr Taylor – Science, Miss Seward – Psychology and Miss Summers – a Learning Support Assistant. Some are seeking pastures new and some are travelling a bit further to America and New Zealand. We wish them all well and thank them for all their hard work. I am very pleased to be able to day that Miss Gosling from Art has been appointed as the new Head of Year 7 and that Miss Faragher is available to take over the Psychology.

A fond farewell as Headteacher from me, not leaving the family just back to being deputy!

PTFA Summer Draw

Congratulations to;

 Phil Evans               Number 101

The Winner of our Summer Draw. for the Cornish Holiday, at Manor Cottage, Polperro, Cornwall

Many thanks to everyone that has bought tickets, and to all who have supported the PTFA and the

 Motiv-8 project.

Year 7

Miss Beales sends her fondest regards to all as she departs for the United States.

Year 8

Wow, the last blog of the year!

The first thing to say is to offer my congratulations to the Year group on a very successful year. For many it has been an excellent year with many successes. For a few, it has been a year where some challenges have had to be faced and overcome.

We now look forward to next year, the final year of Key Stage 3. It will involve many decisions on what route and what subjects your son takes forward into Year 10. It’s a really good idea to be considering what aims and ambitions your son has for the future. There will be a number of meetings to consider all these questions.

Many thanks to the team of tutors for their support this year. Without their invaluable help I would really struggle!

Boys, have a good break. Make sure that you clean your room and offer to help out around the house!

Mr Tucker

Year 9

Well what a great end to another school year, can you believe your sons are about to embark on their GCSE studies!!!!

This week started with Celebration Day, 12 members of staff, 134 students and 3 coaches taking the 41/2  hour journey to Thorpe Park Theme Park,  In sweltering conditions they trekked around the park queuing in some cases for over an hour to experience the exhilarating thrills –or so they said- of the rides.  It was a great day with a great bunch of lads, all arrived home safely and surprisingly nobody was ill.

Tuesday was another great day, and again the weather was kind to us as we held our annual sports day, there was a lovely atmosphere about the place and it was great to see so many people competing and cheering each other on, not to mention the lovely spread put on by the canteen for lunch.

Wednesday, we said a final farewell to our year 11’s with a trip to Woodlands and a BBQ and games.

Thursday – all calm on the home front ready for the final leg and a 12-30 finish on Friday.

Thanks for another great year, despite all the traumas there has been so many positive things happening, but now let us all go and enjoy a fantastic summer and come back refreshed and ready to start on the next part our journey. Stay safe and I will see you in September.

Mrs Mcloughlin

 YEAR 10
I was very pleased to attend the Plymouth University presentation for the GCSE Computer Science students with Mrs McLoughlin last Friday. The Year 10 boys - Otis Carty, Jack
Tookey, Mateusz Kłoczko, Tyler Critchley and Brad Andrews - spent two days and
a night at PU where they engaged in activities related to robotics, app making
and coding.  The boys enjoyed the UniExperience a great deal and made some
new friends.

 Lots of positive feedback
from Celebration Day!  41 Year 10 students took part in the Thorpe Park
trip and had an amazing day!  The weather was perfect and the behaviour
exemplary from all 135 participants.  A big thank you to the staff who
helped on the day.

Well done to all the boys who participated in Sports Day this week - the Keily Kings were triumphant overall, but we’re very proud of the hard work of each and every competitor.

We say a heartfelt “Adiós” to Juan Guittierez - who leaves the year group this week to move back to Spain with his family. The past year has been transformational for Juan who and he has made some very good friends that will stay in touch with him online.
 llegar sano y salvo!

Finally a big thank you from the Year 10 students and tutor team to Mr Davies for leading us through an incredibly difficult time in the College’s history.

“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” — John Maxwell. Thank you Mr Davies for showing us the way!

 Have a great summer everyone!

Mr Scott

O God of all beginnings and endings,
We praise and thank you for the gift of this school year.
It has been a time filled with grace and blessings,
With challenges and opportunities, joys and sorrows.

The days have passed quickly, O Lord.
The weeks, the months, the seasons, the holidays and holy days,
The exams, vacations, breaks, and assemblies,
All have come forth from your hand.

While we trust that your purposes have always been at work each day,
Sometimes it has seemed difficult to understand and appreciate
Just what you have been up to in our school.

Give us the rest and refreshment we need this summer.
Let our efforts of this past year bear fruit.
Bring all of our plans to a joyful conclusion,
And bless us, according to your will,

With the fulfillment of our summer hopes and dreams.
Watch over us in the weeks of rest ahead,
And guide each day as you have done this past year.
Help us return to school with a new spirit and a new energy.

May we continue to grow
In age, wisdom, knowledge and grace
All the days of our lives.

Amen.

SBCC Headteacher Blog for wb 14.7.14

Hello once again,

Another busy week with only one to go this academic year!

Could I thank parents for their understanding with any disruption caused by the recent strike action. We tried to continue in as normal a fashion as possible.

We are pleased to welcome onto our staff Miss Rowlands as a Geography teacher. Miss Rowlands has been helping us out already with Miss Blackshaws classes whilst Miss Blackshaw is on maternity leave.

I have received a letter from Devon and Cornwall Police commenting how well St. Boniface’s pupils assisted in refereeing and organising the various primary schools present at the Plymouth Schools Tag Rugby Festival, I have also recently seen a letter commending our Sports Leaders at another Festival of Sport held in Plymouth – it is fantastic that we are being noticed once again in our wider community and is a real sign that we are regaining our standing within the City. A huge thanks to all involved particularly the students who are obviously superb ambassadors for what we are trying to do back here at base.

I have spent considerable time this week with the support of CAST, formulating a bid for a new Sports Hall for the College. It is a long shot so I am not allowing myself to become too excited just yet but as Brian Clough the football manager says – “ you will not score a goal if you don’t take a shot” – I will be taking many shots but I hope this one scores!

Curriculum Enrichment Day is Monday 14th July with Sports Day on Tuesday 15th July – looking forward to two great days!

A reminder to parents please that the final school day for this term is Friday 18th July where the school will be closing at 12.30.

Summermix are offering 3 courses from a choice more than 100 to occupy some of the Summer holiday with friends( or to make new ones)  all Plymouth students. A great opportunity to try a new skill/sport/adventure. Sign up on line at www.summermix.co.uk or get a brochure from the library.

 Mr Davies

Year 7

My penultimate week as Head of Year 7 at St Boniface’s. I am writing this with a heavy heart as I prepare for my final week as Head of Year 7.

I had a lovely surprise on Tuesday in Assembly, the year 7 and 9 students had arranged with Mr Ousey to play McFly’s song “Stargirl”, with a full band, drums, electric guitar and singers! I was so touched! It was a lovely idea and such a nice treat!

We were also able to celebrate the successes of the past year with so many awards and prizes! Well done to all students who received an award! This very exciting assembly also saw the final Kindle handed out to Liam in 7V, a very deserved winner! Well done Liam. It was down to Liam’s thorough hard work and merit earning that he was in the 100 merit club draw so well done!

Due to the very poor weather last week, we had to postpone Sports Day, however we are all very excited to be taking part in the day rescheduled for Tuesday 15th July.

Celebration Day is the talk of the college! We have students taking part in various activities on Monday as part of our Celebration Day! I am off to Thorpe Park with 200 students and surprisingly, I’m very much looking forward to it! Wish me luck!  I look forward to hearing about how all of the year 7’s got on next week.

I know it seems as though it is not as important due to summer now being only one week away, however I really do not want Year 7’s standards to start to slide. It is expected that all students have the correct uniform and look smart at all times. I know there are occasions where some of the older boys may be seen not sticking to this rule, but I know that their Head of Year is just as strict and on to them, as much as I am! My year group is something I am so proud of and hope, that with your parental support, we can nip this in the bud before it gets out of hand. One of the main issues I have is appropriate footwear. Students should have leather school shoes and not black trainers. Thank you for your continued support.

To continue the extremely high standards that Year 7 demonstrate, please can I also ask parents to make a note of the following;

·       Mobile phones should not be on during the school day. They should be switched off and in bags so that learning is not disturbed.

·       Home learning should be completed for all subjects in a timely manner. Please can parents insist on checking planners and guiding the students with organisation.

·       Please can parents ensure their son has a reading book in his bag every day to support our reading scheme. This is to further help and improve literacy standards whereby all students will undertake 30 minutes of silent reading each day.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend,

Miss Beales

 Year 8

Thanks to Mr MacCormick for leading our assembly last week. He introduced the boys to the challenge of Ironman competitions in which competitors swim 2.4 miles, cycle 112 miles and then complete a full marathon of 26.2 miles. The theme was on how we prepare for daily challenges in life and then how we deal with them when they are in front of us. While Mr MacCormick hopes to complete his first competition next year it was brought to our attention that Mr Romaine, 8E’s tutor, has completed a good number of these already. Expert advice is at hand if you need it!

After Toby M.’s success recently in gaining a place in the Devon water-polo team, we look forward to hearing how Lewis C. has got on this week at Buckingham Palace with his cadet group. I’m sure he’ll have a great story to tell!

We are all looking forward very much to Celebration Day on Monday and Sports Day on Tuesday. Let’s hope that the sun shines!

Congratulations to Dan C. who leads the Achievement points score with 264, closely followed by Robbie M. on 255 and Callum C. on 228. Well done to them on such an outstanding effort.

Well done to the entire Year group, too, on accumulating 2,338 points for excellent effort and 1,099 for outstanding classwork! A really good reflection on the commendable attitude and approach to school life that the Year group display.

Mr. Tucker

 Year 9

Well after a rather sad start to the week when we said goodbye to one of our students following a tragic accident, the week suddenly picked up speed as we started to prepare for an action packed final run in.

Monday – Celebration Day marking the schools 150th anniversary – sees lots of activities taking place, everything from sporting activities, trips to the cinema,  visits to the zoo and a trip to Thorpe Park involving 0ver a 130 students.

Tuesday – Sports Day, the weather forecast looks good I’m told – fingers crossed.

Friday– 12-30 Finish

Rather a lot to look forward to.

Finally, can I wish Gabriel good luck for this weekend and next as he competes in the 4th round of the National MTB Series at Sherwood Forest and the  'Mersey 24 hour Time Trial' near Chester

 Mrs Mcloughlin

 YEAR 10

Thank you to Dr Summers and Mr Ramage for leading us in assembly Monday, and to Mrs Hudson for leading assembly on Tuesday.  The reports read out from the Y10 work experience week were fantastic and showed us how grown-up the group have become over the last four years. The tutors and I were very proud of their achievements.

The Year 10 mocks were a success, and boys behaved well throughout the week. It gave each student the opportunity to experience what their real exams will be like in 2015 - 10 months from now.  A big thank you to Ms Martin, Mrs Gimblett and all the wonderful invigilators we have at the College who reported the boys’ behaviour was good throughout the week.

Mr Tew and his sixth form team arranged a wonderful experience week for the year group - starting on Monday with talks from Plymouth University Student Ambassadors about the options they have at the end of Year 13 in 2017.  The students then took part in a range of A-Level lessons and tried their hand at sixth form learning.  A big thank you to Mr Tew, Miss McFarland, Mr Ousey and Mrs Cox for arranging the opportunity.

The PE Department’s Miss Sanford showed me a letter received from ASDA this week who recently sponsored the ASDA Active Day at St Peter’s Catholic Primary School. The letter thanks Miss Sanford and the students - including Year 10s Cody Nankivell, Mark Canning and Jake Stanton - for all the help they gave the team and for being “a fantastic group of students, who interacted with the primary school children brilliantly and showed amazing patience.”

A few important reminders - we’ve seen an increase in the number of students wearing trainers to school, and whilst we have absolutely no issue with the trainers being worn on the yard at break and lunchtime to take part in sporting activities, it is important students return to their correct school uniform before class.

Also we have Sports Day on Tuesday - please make sure your son wears his PE kit to school - or house colours if he wants to! 10B - red, 10E - purple, 10G - yellow,

10K - blue, 10V - green.

With celebration day on Monday, sports day on Tuesday and a half day next Friday, the last week of term will seem very short indeed.  I hope Year 10 make the most of the last week and have a very restful holiday.

Mr Scott

Sixth form News

Last week a lot happened..

A group of Sixth Formers represented the College at an Edmund a Rice conference in Manchester. The students took part in lectures and met representatives from the United Nations . They will take this project forward into the new year. Three highlights were the car that the hire company provided, the overnight stay with families and presentation by Tom.

We then had induction week for year 11s, a taster week where all subjects could be sampled. Great enthusiasm from the teachers led to exciting lessons, a drop in session for parents to talk about the sixth form. Talks on Accountancy, Teaching Assistant qualifications, Business Management and sports coaching took place. Places for September are still available.

Induction week is not just for Academic students, vocational visits have been taking place for year 11 and year 10, the highlights being pasties being made at Cornwall College, along with plastering, plumbing, visits to mechanics, skills group and Reach are going ahead.

Our sports coaches are going from strength to strength, many helping out at Mount Edgecombe with many primary school students, special thanks to Miss Sanford.

We have been training our new Gym instructors this week, an intensive week long course leading to recognised qualifications for students wanting to enter the profession. An excellent course but incredibly hard work.

On Friday we had our sixth form football contest at Goals, teams of many standards took part, the weather failed to ruin the atmosphere, though seeing Merv smashed against the side wall was definitely a highlight, the one time he was not late! Everyone enjoyed the event and the rematches are being planned.

On Friday a group of students represented the College at a conference with our MP, Alison Seabeck, on sexism and the media. A good conference, including a working breakfast focussing on the use of new technology and what is deemed acceptable in society today. Some very interesting views and information were shared by all.

Our vocational students have now finished and the results should be available next week.

This week has been year 10 induction into sixth form. The students and staff have tried many new subjects and have started planning their future careers. Vocational visits to City College, Skills Group and Norpro have been included along with careers interviews etc. Thanks to Mrs Hudson for her hard work.

Mr Tew

your Son told his disciples
to become like little children.
Lead us to work for the welfare
and protection of all young people.
May we respect their dignity
that they may flourish in life,

St Boniface's College Headteacher's Blog

7th July 2014 Week B

Hello once again everyone, and welcome to my Blog.

This week has been more normal and I would like to thank you for your kind words, thoughts and prayers after the recent tragic event. Our thoughts and prayers go to the family and friends.

As you will be able to see from below an awful lot has and is taking place at the College with pupils and staff working hard right up to the last day. Speaking of last days the College will be closing at 12.30 on Friday 18th July for the end of term.

We have needed to postpone Sports Day, due today, until Tuesday 15th

We are having a Year 11 v Staff sporting event and Barbeque on Wednesday 16th July at about 5pm – just year 11 pupils and parents please.

Have a good week everyone,

 Mr. Davies

 Year 7

A lovely week for year 7 this week!

We had a fantastic assembly on Tuesday from Mrs Ward and Mr Corkhill’s tutor group, 7V.  The helped us to reflect on our own lives and decide what makes us who we are. Following the tragic past week in the college this was really nice to reflect on friends that offer us support and the family community we have here at St Boniface’s. Thanks to all those involve in making this such a lovely assembly.

Year 7’s were not the youngest in the college anymore, due to 100 year 6’s arriving on Wednesday for their induction day. I’m sure many of you remember the day last year as you sent your son’s off for their first taster of St Boniface’s! We had lots of nervous faces at 9am, however I am pleased to say this changed to many happy and smiling faces by 3pm! Thank you to all students who helped and made the Year 6 students feel so welcome.

Miss Heduvan has been off school for the past two weeks following an ear operation, so we all, especially 7E, wish her well on her recovery and look forward to seeing her back very soon!

We are all very excited about Sports Day on Friday, we are praying that the rain stays away long enough for the boys to enjoy the activities! Mind you, it wouldn’t be a British Summer without the rain!

I know it seems as though it is not as important due to summer now being only two weeks away, however I really do not want Year 7’s standards to start to slide. One of the main issues I have, is appropriate footwear. ·         Please can parents ensure their son has a reading book in his bag every day to support our reading scheme. This is to further help and improve literacy standards whereby all students will undertake 30 minutes of silent reading each day.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend,

 Miss Beales

Year 8

Many thanks to all the parents who have expressed their sorrow over the passing of Matthew Cotter. An amazing young man, full of promise and one who will be sorely missed.

Mr Romaine led our assembly last week and true to his promise of all his assemblies featuring a cycling theme, this one did too! The central character in the true story was a French cycling champion who during the Second World War helped to smuggle papers and documents around the country in his bike frame. These papers and passports would be given to people trying to escape from France. The cyclist’s name escapes me! As he rode around France training he was often stopped but because he was so well known he was never given any problems. He allowed himself to be searched but asked the soldiers not to touch his bike as it was all set up for him. Believing everything to be above board, they did as he asked. Through his bravery many people escaped torture and death. A true hero. Many thanks to Mr Romaine for delivering a captivating assembly.

After a successful knee operation we welcome back Mr Lord this week. Being a key member of the tutor team, it is great to see him back with 8G.

The boys have been busy preparing for Sportsday tomorrow but it has been postponed due to a poor weather forecast. Mr Greenway has, however, let us know the results of the events that have been running this week that will contribute to the overall points score:

1st                           Kiely                                                  180 points

2nd                          Grimshaw                                          130 points

=3rd                        Barrett/Vaughan                                110 points

5th                           Errington                                            70 points

Well done to all who have competed so hard!

Congratulations to Toby Marks who has been selected for the Devon Water-Polo team, a great achievement! Also, congratulations and thanks to Jordan Woodall who was the only Year 8 student selected to help with the incoming Yr. 7 Induction Day yesterday. Well done Jordan!

Mr. Tucker

Year 9

Why is it as soon as you mention those words ‘Sports Day’, the weather takes a turn for the worst? The lads have been gearing up for the day, making banners for their houses in tutor time and for some even competing in some of the early events, but alas the weather forecast predicts poor weather so it has been rearranged to the 15th July, fingers crossed.

Although it has been a quiet week in terms of activities for year 9, the college has been in full flow, every which way you turn year 5 & 6’s visiting the school for transition evenings, transition day and  open days and the ‘little un’s project – more news about this one in the Plymouth Shopper magazine this month. Thank you to the year 9 ambassadors for their help on these projects, it was really great to see them proudly showing off their school.

Next week should be an uneventful week in terms of activities, however, the following week sees us celebrating the schools 150th anniversary with Celebration day on Monday 14th and Sports Day on Tuesday 15th, so plenty to look forward to.

Mrs McLoughlin

YEAR 10

I’m very pleased that the Year 10 boys have taken their mock exams so seriously this past week.  The marking will give each student a good indication of how they will perform in their exams in 2015.  If your son struggled with exam technique, revision or stress, please contact his mentor as a matter of urgency to discuss how we can support him over the coming year.

We were very proud of three Year 10 students this week who went on to the second round of the England Rugby trials at Tavistock.  The three boys – Ben McGinley, Jake Stanton and Lewis Swatton all worked well and performed well, following a 6 hour trial Jake and Lewis made it through to the final trial on September 11.

BONIFACE LITTL’UNS

Pupils from St Paul’s Catholic Primary School in St Budeaux attended a day-long event at St Boniface’s to get a taste of secondary school lessons. Eleven boys and two TAs took part in the day which saw them experience four workshops before lunch and presentations.

The first hour saw the boys work on a digital editing project in which they created a photograph with three of themselves in each image. They then had an explosive time in the science department – learning about the wonderful world we live in – before heading out to play football with the sixth form “Big Brothers”. Each student then took to the iPads to program and control Sphero robots – which was lots of fun for them and the adults supervising. Finally the group went to the College’s catering block to make cupcakes for their parents – finished off with St Boniface’s cake toppers – before making pizzas together for their lunch.

At the afternoon presentation with parents, each boy was given a “Boniface Littl’uns” T-shirt, a certificate and some gifts to take back to their school.

9-year-old Aidan Bettell said “my brother Kiegan is in Year 7 and he helped today – I loved it and can’t wait to start here.” Helen Reid – a TA from St Paul’s added “A big thank you to all the staff involved - we had a fabulous day.”

The College plans to continue the work of the “Boniface Littl’uns” programme over the coming months with schools across the City.

 Mr Scott

CILIP Carnegie Award (23/6/14)

The book that we were assigned, ‘All the Truth That’s in Me’, was not a book that I would normally read.  However, I couldn’t put it down when I started to read it.  The Carnegie Medal is awarded in London, so what we were doing was called the Shadow Event.  The idea of the day was to see each school’s presentation, and vote on which one we thought was the best.  Then, we would compare it to what had happened in London.

The book was a marvellous read, and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who is interested in romantic thrillers.  Two weeks prior to the presentation day, we began to plan what we wanted to talk about and how we were going to present it.  We settled for a PowerPoint, backed up by a piece of music called The Aviators, by Helen Jane Long.  The music was used to create an atmosphere.

We worked well as a team of six, and soon our presentation was ready.  As a practice, we presented it to our English class, and that went very well.  On the day, we were all ready and prepared to deliver our presentation to the other schools.  Last year, Callington Community College won, so this year we went to their school in Cornwall.  There was an author, who talked to us about his career, and it was his birthday.  He was very funny and made us all laugh.

When it was our turn to present, we were all a bit nervous, but we managed to get over our nerves and deliver a smashing presentation.  After a nice lunch, we found out the results of the London votes.  Our book didn’t win the actual Carnegie Medal, but our book was voted second in the shadow event.

Overall, it was a great day, and good luck to the lads that do it next year.

Lead us to work for the welfare
and protection of all young people.
May we respect their dignity
that they may flourish in life,
following the example of the same
Jesus Christ our Lord.

 Amen
