St. Boniface's College Headteacher's Blog for the week beginning 30.6.14

Head teacher’s Blog for week beginning 30th June 2014

I am sure you have all heard of the tragic news of one taken so young.

We cannot celebrate at this time and our thoughts and prayers go out to family and friends. If any students need comforting or support from the College then please do contact us, trained staff are on hand.

Mr Davies

In memory of our friend Matthew

Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped away into the next room.
I am I, and you are you. Whatever we were to each other that we still are.
Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way which you always used.
Put no difference in your tone, wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together.

Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was,
let it be spoken without effect, without the trace of shadow on it.
Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was; there is unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
I am waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner.

All is well.

Amen

Blog for wb 23.6.14

Headteachers Blog for week beginning 23rd June 2014

One month left and so much to do!

Every year appears to be the same and I always look back and wonder where that time went. My mother tells me that as you get older the time goes more quickly – I am starting to notice but what does this mean for me? Maybe we will have one of those long hot summers as I remember from my childhood…

We certainly have had some week.

I was very proud to be able to welcome candidates for the Headteacher post to the College, as soon as I am aware of any news on the outcomes I shall of course let you know. We are all offering up prayers that Governors are able to make the right decision to help us all continue to move forward – it cannot be an easy decision for them.

Breaking News - Mr Frank Ashcroft has been appointed as the new Headteacher of St. Boniface's College.

Thursday saw us also welcome about 100 Year 4 and 5 boys into the College for a Retreat Day. The pupils were a real credit to their primary schools and families and certainly appeared to enjoy the day. Thanks also to the primary teachers for putting up with the disruptions to normal school life when such events occur.

We have been heavily involved in the CAFOD Run for Women scheme this year and welcomed Simon Giarchi, an old boy, back in on Thursday. Year 7 and 8 pupils were sponsored and ran a prearranged course to raise money for this very worthy cause – well done to all.

It was lovely on Tuesday evening to welcome Year 9 parents and pupils into the College for the Key Stage 3 to 4 Transition Evening. Thanks to the members of the PTFA for laying on refreshments. Please remember to support the PTFA Summer Draw.

Year 10 parents please remember the Year 10 Parent /Teachers evening on Tuesday 24th.

I also look forward to welcoming pupils and parents to the Key Stage 3 Celebration Evening on Wednesday in the College Hall from 6pm

Next week we are having an international visitor, Headteacher, in with us from Nepal – it really is amazing to see how fortunate we are in education compared to other parts of the world. We are also welcoming a group of students from St Peter’s Primary school in for a spell to see what “Big school is like”! I was fortunate enough this week to visit one of our primary partner schools within CAST in Bodmin, St Marys. Watching Year 1 boys and girls cue up outside their class ready to go on a nature trail – were we ever like that! I wanted to pick them all up congratulate them all, dare I use the word “cute”.

Have a great week all and thanks for reading.

 Mr Davies

Year 7

A very busy week for year 7 this week!

We had a lovely double assembly on Tuesday. This started with a great assembly from Mrs Printy’s tutor group, 7G telling us all about CAFOD’s great work in Brazil and how some of the poorest families in Brazil still have such a passion for football making balls out of plastic bag and string. We were able to celebrate the fantastic work our year group has done in raising money for such a great charity, with a special mention to George B in 7E who raised over £50 on his own. Well done George! We then had the Cafod Young Leaders from Year 9, speak to the year group about the work they have been doing and how they hope to raise further money with the help of the Year 7 students. Thanks to all those involve in making this such a lovely assembly.

We were very fortunate this week to be given a presentation by PC Kirkup on the way that we speak to each other and homophobia and racism. Thank you to PC Kirkup for giving us such an inspirational speech.

On Thursday the Year 7 students took part in Cafod’s run for women, I believe a great amount of money was raised, do well done lads. I will hopefully be able to report a figure next week.

Thursday was a very busy day in school indeed. Not only the Cafod run for women, we had 96 year 4 and 5 students from various primary schools, visit St Boniface’s for a Spiritual Retreat Day, based on the Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul. Although an extremely hectic day, all students had a great time and it was lovely to have some Year 10 ambassadors helping for the day. Many thanks particularly to Miss Heduvan and Mrs Printy and to all others involved.

We are have some exciting events coming up, the Key Stage 3 Awards Evening and Sports Day just to name a few! I really look forward to this time of the year, reflecting on the achievements of the past academic year.

I am sadly still a little concerned with the amount of Year 7 students who are starting to try and bend the rules on uniform. It is expected that all students have the correct uniform and look smart at all times. I know there are occasions where some of the older boys may be seen not sticking to this rule, but I know that their Head of Year is just as strict and on to them, as much as I am! My year group is something I am so proud of and hope, that with your parental support, we can nip this in the bud before it gets out of hand. One of the main issues I have, is appropriate footwear. Students should have leather school shoes and not black trainers. Thank you for your continued support.

 To continue the extremely high standards that Year 7 demonstrate, please can I also ask parents to make a note of the following;

·         Mobile phones should not be on during the school day. They should be switched off and in bags so that learning is not disturbed.

·         Home learning should be completed for all subjects in a timely manner. Please can parents insist on checking planners and guiding the students with organisation.

·         Please can parents ensure their son has a reading book in his bag every day to support our reading scheme. This is to further help and improve literacy standards whereby all students will undertake 30 minutes of silent reading each day.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend in the sunshine!

Miss Beales

Year 8

The highlight of this week was the CAFOD run for woman to support social justice for women world-wide. Run in beautiful conditions yesterday, it was a tremendous response to Mr MacCormick’s appeal to support the effort. Well done to all.

I led last week’s assembly on the theme of making your own mind up. The idea was that we try to improve our decision-making particularly when it had an impact on others and their well-being. During the assembly we saw some powerful batting, accurate Frisbee throwing, fantastic ball-juggling but nobody wanted to run down the science corridor shouting and screaming and knocking on all the doors! You’ll have to speak to your son to see how that was all tied together around the theme!

A handful of Yr. 8 boys were out yesterday assisting at a primary schools’ cricket festival. They have recently completed a coaching award so this was an opportunity to put things into practice. I look forward to hearing how the day went. Thanks to Mr Greenway for giving the boys such a positive opportunity.

Keep Mr Lord in your thoughts, 8G’s tutor, as he undergoes a knee operation. We look forward to welcoming him back very shortly.

 Mr. Tucker

 Year 9

Another week, another blog, and three weeks gone already, I am refusing to blink or the term will be over – July 18th term ends.

It has been another busy week in the College with interviews being held for our new Head Teacher so by the time you read this we could have a new Head Teacher in position, but I hope like me you will appreciate the good work Mr Davies has done over the last 12months for the college.

It has been so nice to see the sun I think it makes everybody feel better, and it is nice to be able to hold outside events such as the year 7 & 8 run for women and raising money for Cafod.  Keeping our fingers crossed for the continuation of the dry spell, July 4th sees our annual sports day being held on the school premises with events for all from mountain biking to softball and of course the athletic event, and of course our 150th Anniversary Celebration Day on July 14th.

Thank you to all the parents who attended the hugely successful Transition Evening on Tuesday, and thank you for all the positive e-mails of thanks received, I hope the event went some way to answering any concerns students and parents may have had about their sons GCSE option choices. If you have any further questions please e-mail the relevant Head of Department direct.

Have a good week

Mrs Mcloughlin

 Year 10

Mr Scott, as a staff Governor, has been heavily involved in the appointment process for the new Headteacher this week and apologises for not having an entry for Year 10 yet  - please check on Monday and I am sure the entry will appear.

Last week was very busy for me – I was working in my Governor role to contribute to the Head Teacher recruitment process. Apologise for the delay in this blog entry for Year 10.

I was very proud this week to see a range of students in all year groups take part in the Head Teacher interview process. Special thanks to Jake Stanton and Brad Andrews for their involvement in the student panel.

Earlier in the week I received a lovely email from a Work Experience employer Tell Systems Ltd – who commented that the four Year 10 students placed there worked extremely well and produced some great work. Just one of many success stories. Well done Year 10!

The assembly led by Mr James explained very clearly the expectations for the upcoming Sports Day on July 4. The following information might be of use:

TG – House – Form Tutor – House Colour – House Mascot – Head of House

10B – Barrett House – Mr Tucker (Maths) – Red – Barrett Bulldogs – Mr Tucker (PE)

10E – Errington House – Mr James – Purple – Errington Eagles – Mrs McLoughlin

10G – Grimshaw House – Mr Ousey – Yellow – Grimshaw Grizzlies – Mr Scott

10K – Keily House – Mr Neethling – Blue – Keily Kings – Miss Beales

10V – Vaughan House – Mr Chambers – Green – Vaughan Vipers – Mr Redfern

We’re encouraging all students to wear their house colours, paint their faces, wear coloured wigs etc to show house spirit!

 Mr Scott

 Post 16

Lessons have now returned to normal with our Year 12 students starting their Year 13 A2 courses or/and further Vocational. The time used productively now will result in more time being available next Summer when large numbers of examinations will be sat. Teachers are “cracking on at pace” so please ensure that high attendance rates are maintained along with the right work ethic.

Mr Tew has taken a group of our post 16 students up to the Edmund Rice International Student Conference in Manchester. Our involvement with this wider community will help the students gain a greater appreciation of what can be accomplished by working together and what an important part they play in the ER Network. I hope the weather in Manchester has been as good as here!

School Prayer

God, our Father,
Creator of all good things
in the world and within our school community:
We thank you for the gift of this day,
for our families and friends
and for this safe place to learn and grow.

We ask You to bless all who teach and learn.
Through Your Holy Spirit,
guide us as we grow in faith and love
and give us the courage
to be more like Your Son.

We ask this, in Jesus' name.

Amen.

St. Boniface's College Head teachers Blog for wb 16.6.14

Head teachers Blog for week beginning 16.6.14                                               Week A

Here comes the Sun! I wonder how many of our pupils know that was ever a song.

Please remember that there is NO school next Friday 20th June. Staff have a training day looking at how we go about raising teaching and learning onto even higher levels.

We are looking to appoint a permanent Headteacher for next year and interviews are taking place over next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I believe Mr Scott has sent out an e-mail to all parents so please keep an eye out. Your thoughts and prayers would be much appreciated over this vital decision for our College and the boys – thanks.

We have had a lovely week with a very successful Open Evening where the College looked very good inside and out and our pupils shone – very appropriate. Visitors to the College complemented us saying that the pupils were a delight and wonderful ambassadors and that there were lovely relationships between staff and pupils. You may be aware that there are dips in demographic numbers presently in Years 5 and 6 across the City and for visitors who have never witnessed our “family” it was lovely to hear what they had to say. Thanks to the pupils especially for showing off their College but also to staff and parents for being part of the evening.

I look forward to seeing all year 9 parents next Tuesday in the hall for the KS3 to KS4 transition evening 6-00 to 7-00.

I was also very fortunate to be able to attend the Sing Plymouth event last night at Plymouth Pavilions where a group of our students performed – I was blown away by their quality – it really was a fantastic evening and I would encourage pupils to be involved next year and for you to attend if possible.

The 150th Celebration Dinner takes place at Plymouth Albion on June 27th, closing date for tickets is June 20th so please contact Mrs Hudson at the College if you are interested. 01752 779051.

PTFA Project Motiv-8 update....New gym equipment is purchased and currently in storage. We are now in the position financially that we can look to replace the flooring and purchase mirrors. Are there any parents/friends out there that work for companies or do you know of anybody who could possibly help us with this? If so please leave a message in school reception with your name and number.

With our grateful thanks Jill Blake – Chair of PTFA

Year 7

Well here we are in our final term as Year 7 students. I am so incredibly proud of all of the achievements that Year 7 students have made and very much looking forward to celebrating with you as parents at the Key Stage 3 Awards Evening on Wednesday 25th June 2014. This year has been wonderful as Head of Year 7 and I will be very sad to pass the year group onto their new Head of Year in 6 weeks!

We were so lucky this week to celebrate the whole school St Boniface Mass on Wednesday in St Peter’s Church. A lovely service and well done to all of the year 7 students for behaving so impeccably!

I hope you all have a lovely, relaxing half term.

 Miss Beales

 Year 8

Thanks to Dr Trimming for presenting an excellent assembly last week focusing on anniversaries around this time. The main entry was the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings and it was very moving to reflect upon the bravery of all those involved.

The following boys all deserve congratulations for reaching the 100 conduct point benchmark, a great achievement: Jack B., Tom M-P., Antoine T., Finnian B., Callum C., Will D., Alex M., Sam P., Clarke B., Morgan P., Harry C., Jordan W., Owen E., Robbie Mc., Dan C., Lewis E., Harry H., John-Joe K., Ben M., Dayne P., Josh R., Josh S., D’Arcei S., Connor Edgecumbe., Sam Maratty., Ali R., Frankie R. Of these Callum C., Jordan W., Robbie McCarthy and Dan C. have smashed through the 200 conduct point barrier! Brilliant!

Well done, too, to the large number of boys who helped out at the Open Evening on Tuesday. We had a number of boys helping in the PE dept. and they put on a great show, being enthusiastic and very willing. Their help was much appreciated. Amongst others in Year 8 helping in other departments was Antoine who made some great cup-cakes in Catering and kept us supplied on the field!

I’m really pleased with the Year group as a whole and I thank them all very much for their continuing hard work and commitment to school life. Well done!

B. Tucker

Year 9

Another good week had by all, this week seems to be a week of congratulations and well dones.

Congratulations to Harry for his performance playing for the South West basketball team, Congratulations to Liam Jarvis, Harry Williams-Arnold, Abelson Antonio, Brandon Carr-Malloch, Liam Walters, Louis Potterton, Henry Hood, Alusché Latuka  on their fantastic composition and work with some of  the local primary schools in the Sing Plymouth Project which took place at Plymouth Pavilions this week in front of over 2000 people I am told.Well Done to all the lads on their exemplary behaviour and contribution participating in a presentation given by PC Kirkup on the pyramid of hate and related crimes – very thought provoking.

Thank you to the parents on helping the Colleges stance on uniform, we just have one or two lads who need to sort out their footwear –SHOES NOT BLACK TRAINERS.

And finally, I look forward to seeing you all next Tuesday in the hall for the KS3 to KS4 transition evening 6-00 to 7-00 so shouldn't get in the way of the football.

I hope you enjoy your weekend and the sun which I did read is here for the next 10days at least with Plymouth being one of the warmest places in the country, I have probably just jinxed that, we shall see.

Until next week, stay safe.

Mrs Mcloughlin

Year 10

I’ve been impressed with the attitude and commitment to work the Year 10s have shown since returning from Work Experience. The boys have demonstrated a mature approach to their upcoming mock exams, and knuckled down in classes across the curriculum.

Many thanks to Mr Tucker for delivering a fun assembly on Monday – the boys and staff really enjoyed the ‘Laugher’ theme…!  Some great YouTube clips made us chuckle!

Parents evening is coming up on Tuesday June 24th 1540-1830 – please ensure your son makes appointments with his teachers to discuss his progress in his GCSE courses.

Mr Scott

Week B               June 9th

Hello everyone and apologies for the late posting of my Blog.

I was fortunate enough last week to be able to renew some contacts with our Edmund Rice network of Schools and that meant I had to delay this posting. It was very good to re-establish links with some colleagues you may remember from a few years ago Mr Kavanagh and Dr Murphy. I am sure you will be happy to know that both are well and give their fondest regards for the College and pupils. I believe that closer links with these outstanding ER schools will help us reach similar levels quickly and we are looking to send a contingent of key personnel to look at the systems that have been set up  to keep us moving forward in these schools this term.

Reminder that there is a staff training day on Friday 20th June. The College will be closed for all pupils except those taking exams. Staff are looking at a new Teaching and Learning policy to ensure we continue to make progress in this vital area.

We held our St. Boniface Feast Day Mass in St. Peter’s last week. It was a truly wonderful sight to see all the KS3 students as well as some KS4 and 5 (exams) pack the church – they even sang Bread of Heaven! Thanks to the pupils, Father John and staff for making this such a special occasion.

A massive congratulations to Mark C (10V) on qualifying for the English National Pool team.  Mark and his team will be playing in the European Pool Championships in Yorkshire next year.  We are all very proud of you here at the college.

RHINE

The Rhine trip took place during the May half term this year – with 34 boys and 4 teachers, they set off on Sunday to Rhens – a small town on the Rhine.  The long journey seemed like a distant memory once the boys arrived in the town and had their first German meal!

On Monday the group went to the town of Boppard for a wine-tasting at family run vineyard, before heading down the Rhine on a boat trip to the city of Koblenz for a spot of shopping!  Tuesday was an early start, with a long trip to the city of Cologne. The boys enjoyed a visit to the Lindt Chocolate Museum & Factory followed by lunch in Koln centre, before heading to the Bayer Leverkusen football stadium – BayArena.  Wednesday was spent at the theme park Phantasialand – which was great fun and very tiring!

The return journey the next day consisted mainly of White House Down, Frozen, Madagascar and sleeping!

Rhine 2015 letters are available soon! Places are limited – so get your deposits in ASAP.

Year 7

Year 8

Well done to Bradley W., Callum H., Aiden N., John B., Max F., who represented the school so well during the week while on a photo shoot to promote Cafod’s Run for Women event. Mr MacCormick was very impressed!

Welcome to Seokhun C. and Ben R. who have recently joined Yr. 8. Many thanks to Euan A. and Antoine T. for accepting the task of helping the boys settle in. Ben has only come from Tor Bridge but Seokhun has arrived from Seoul, South Korea and doesn’t speak a word of English! Euan’s job of communicating with Seokhun and making sure that he’s happy has been a very challenging one but he has done a terrific job.

We had our annual St. Boniface day mass on Wednesday in St. Peter’s church and the boys were terrific. Many thanks to Denver B., Tom D., Kameron C. and Aidan P. who helped out with the service.

Mr. B. Tucker

Year 9

Well here we go one last term until the summer holidays and the start of GCSE subjects for our lads, scary!!! On that note don't forget KS3 to KS4 transition evening on Tuesday 17th June you should have received details by e-mail.

Next week, years 7, 8 & 9 have a guest speaker visiting the school, PC Kirkup will speak to all the lads on the topic of homophobic and racist incidents and how they are classed as crimes and the knock on effect such incidents can have.

A final reminder, on the topic of uniform, please ensure all students are correctly dressed – no trainers/canvas shoes, skinny jeans etc. any students incorrectly dressed from Monday onwards could be sent home.

This week, was the Feast of St. Boniface and to mark the occasion the school held a mass in St Peters to celebrate our college patron, the boys were a real credit, extremely respectful and, well behaved well done lads.

Congratulations to Liam J, Harry W-A, Abelson A, Adam W, Liam W, Louis P, Ben C, and Alusché L  on their fantastic composition and work with some of  the local primary schools on the Sing Plymouth Project and good luck with their premiere at Plymouth Pavilions next week.

Mrs Mcloughlin

YEAR 10

Last week Year 10 took part in an exciting work experience week. I’ve received very positive feedback about the students – particularly about their attitude to work, outstanding behaviour and commitment to their task.

I can’t wait to hear more about their week and report back next week on the blog!

Mr Scott
