St. Boniface's College Blog for week beginning Monday 1st July 2013

Saturday 29th June,

Good morning all, please find below a statement from the chair of Governors of St. Boniface's Catholic College regarding the leadership of the College. It is expected that all members of the St. Boniface community will have received via first class post a copy of the statement by now. The statement was also released by the College to the press but every effort has been made to ensure that our community were first to hear the news.

Dear Parents and friends

Investigation outcome

I am now in a position to communicate the outcome of the recent investigation into
a complaint, from outside the College, about  the College’s Headteacher, Mr Peter Eccles.

I have received the investigators’ report, which is confidential to Governors and will not be published. However, I can report that the investigators concluded that Mr Eccles had conducted ‘an inappropriate relationship’ with a female member of staff, which was inconsistent with his role as Head Teacher of a Catholic School and contrary to the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church. As a result of this, the investigators concluded that Mr Eccles had brought St Boniface’s College into serious disrepute.

The report makes clear that breaches of conduct relate only to an expectation that Mr Eccles should exemplify in his behaviour the teachings of the Roman Catholic faith. As a result of the inquiry and the extensive media interest it has prompted, Mr Eccles has offered his resignation, which the Governors have accepted with effect from 30th June 2013.

Mr Eccles has asked me to pass on his comment to you that: “This episode has occurred at a particularly difficult time in my private life. I am pleased that this is now closed and I can resume my career with a new headship in Cumbria.”

I wish to acknowledge Mr Eccles considerable commitment to leadership of the College over the past few years.

The priority of the College continues to be to ensure our students achieve their best through teaching and learning in a caring and supportive environment. We thank staff, students and parents for their help in achieving this in what has been a difficult time for the College.

I am pleased to inform you that Mr Andrew Davies will continue in his role as Acting Head Teacher until September 2014. During this period the College will agree permanent arrangements to come into effect at the start of the 2014-15 school year.

Mr Davies has demonstrated excellent leadership during his tenure as Deputy Headteacher and Acting Headteacher and has won the trust and respect of both staff and students. The Governing Body looks forward to working with him to take the College on to new successes.

Yours sincerely

Stephen Hole
Chair of Governors

Could I take this opportunity to thank all those parents who responded to our recent OFSTED questionnaire. The inspection took pace last Wednesday and Thursday and we are awaiting the report from the OFSTED inspection team, expected before the end of term. As soon as we receive a copy we will of course pass the details on to you.

I do hope that you have had your passwords and usernames for the Sims Learning Gateway, SLG, where up to date information regarding your son and his progress can be found. It really is worth a look if you have not yet done so.

The new year 6 induction evening is this Wednesday, 3rd July starting at 6 pm with the 7th being the induction day for those new pupils joining us in September.

Please forgive me for such a short Blog this week  - the staff have all been very busy with the OFSTED team in.

I know that all clubs will be running as normal.

I intend to add to the Blog on Saturday morning, 29th June.

I hope you have a peaceful weekend.

KS3 Transition Evening for year 9 pupils and parents

Tuesday 25th June at 6pm in the school hall

Our new website is up and running and I would ask that all parents familiarise themselves with it please.

                                                 www.stbonifaces.com

Passwords to parents for the Sims Learning Gateway, SLG, have been provided via the recent reporting sytem – this gives parents access to live data on their son’s progress and attendance as well as providing an easy route to accessing homework and guidance for its completion.

Thanks to all those who were able to make a super KS3 awards evening last week.
The boys were fantastic.

The Carnegie Medal 2013

The Carnegie Medal is a prize awarded to a children’s author every year. Each year books are short listed for the prize. These shortlisted books are promoted through school libraries.

Across Devon, schools can get involved with shadowing the Carnegie Medal. Each school is assigned a specific book, they then have to prepare a ten minute presentation on it which they will present to other schools across the region. This year’s presentations were held at Tavistock College.

St Boniface’s were assigned the book ‘The Weight of Water’ by Sarah Crossman. Students from 9D worked really hard and came up with an original presentation on the book. They did a fantastic job especially as it was quite a girly book. Despite technical hitches, the students were wonderful and came runners up to Callington’s imaginative presentation.

All students were then asked to vote on the book that they thought would win the Carnegie Medal. Those present voted for ‘The Weight of Water’. The highlight of the day was when the actual Carnegie Medal winner was announced live from London. The winner this year was ‘Maggot Moon’ by Sally Gardner.

Thank you to Will, Scott, Noah, Louis, Joseph, Owen, Charlie and John. Also thanks to Mrs Smith, Miss Cross and Mrs Hill for helping the students.

Tavistock made us all feel very welcome a wonderful day was had by all.

“Dear Mr Davies

Having attended the Carnegie Reading Awards event today at Tavistock College, I just wanted to let you know how proud St Boniface’s College should be of the boys who represented it today. Your year 9 boys gave a marvellous presentation on the novel ‘Weight of Water’ and were voted runners up by all present. I was struck by how polite, smart and mature they were throughout the day and how lovely it was to hear them conversing with the visiting author at lunchtime. They were a credit to the College!”

Year 7

Year 7 have been very busy this week, preparing for the imminent movement into Year 8 on the 1st July.

School photographs were taken on Monday, with (mostly) lovely pictures taken! Well done boys for remaining patient whilst taking part in this process.

We came together as a community on Wednesday evening for the KS3 Awards Evening. I was extremely proud to give out so many certificates to the Year 7 students. Honouring their achievements and hard works was so rewarding, especially when meeting so many proud parents afterwards. Many thanks also to out tutors for supporting their year group by attending the evening. We have a very special pastoral team and it was lovely to see everyone. Special thanks to Mrs Polson (Tutor of 7B) for her wonderful tasting refreshments with all proceeds going to CAFOD, our year group’s chosen charity.

We are very much looking forward to celebrating the student’s achievements in a special celebration assembly this Tuesday (25th June). Presentations will be made of various pastoral certificates, including Head of Faculty, Head of Year and Tutor awards. This will be an opportunity to celebrate the effort and enthusiasm seen by the students throughout the year during their pastoral times.

A special mention this week goes to Harry in 7V who is raising money for the British Legion by selling raffle tickets around school, well done Harry.

I presented this week’s assembly to Year 7 on the theme of “Thankfulness”. We all have so much to be thankful for and this linked nicely into the celebration assembly next week and the recent CAFOD “IF” Campaign. I’d also like to take this opportunity to say a huge “Thank you” to our fantastic Year 7 pastoral Team of tutors. I’m sure that I speak for many parents, in saying what a great team of tutors we have in Year 7 and as the students move into Year 8, I know that they will be very sorely missed. The great news for the year 7’s is that they will be moving into an extremely well established tutor team led by Mr Tucker. Mr Tucker has a wealth of experience as a Head of Year and your sons will be extremely lucky to be in his year group and with his great team of tutors.

Well done to the Year students who took part in Friday’s Sports Day. I was so impressed to see so many of Year 7 getting involved in the activities.

 Some important dates for the Year 7 diary;

July 1st – New Academic Year for all students. Timetables for the Year 7 students will be released later this week.

July 5th – PTFA Quiz Night! 7.30pm. Please come along and support our event – Mr MacCormick (Head of KS3), is our resident Quizmaster for the evening! It should be great fun.

A final note to say “Thank You” to the parents for your continued support throughout the year. This will be my final blog entry for this year’s Year 7, as I pass the year group onto Mr Tucker. I have enjoyed seeing the students develop throughout the year and very much look forward to hearing about their continued success into Year 8.

I wish you all a lovely week! – Miss Beales, Head of Year 7.

Year 8

Another busy but rewarding week with many of our lads achieving success in many forms both in and out of the classroom, Congratulations this week go to: James, Win, Jack, Keenan and Matthew  who entered the ‘Code Skool Challenge’ at Plymouth University and won Best Team certificates, ITunes vouchers, and memory sticks. They coded a website and a game about safety on social media using the universities facilities. They were fantastically behaved and worked incredibly well with each other and the university student ambassadors, as well as the professors there.

Wednesday evening saw many more students receiving awards at the KS3 Awards Evening for their achievement and efforts in the classroom this year,  Special awards went to : David for French, Daniel for English,  William for Maths  and Liam for Art and Years Heads Award, but well done to all those who received certificates you should all be proud of yourselves.

On the sports fields across the city our lads are also being rewarded for their efforts after long hard football and rugby seasons, well done to: Jack’s football team – the YMCA – who won the cup and Devonport Services football team who won the SW challenge cup.  The team includes, Liam, Devan, Piran and Tom.

Year 9

MR SCOTT

This week has been a "winning week" for my Year 9 students! The pastoral team are proud of the effort each and every student puts in to their work, their community and themselves.

A group of students represented the College at the Carnegie Awards at Tavistock College.  The Carnegie Medal is a prize awarded to a children’s author every year.  Each year books are shortlisted  for the prize. Tavistock College made us all feel very welcome a wonderful day was had by all.

At the KS3 Awards Evening – Year 9 took 10 of the 15 major awards – a huge well done to you all!  Ben won the Head of Year award for Year 9.

And finally a huge well done to the Year 9 students competing at Sports Day… they showed true sportsmanship and worked together to achieve.

It is also right to recognise the efforts of my hardworking, dedicated team of tutors who working unendingly to support the boys in Year 9.  As we approach the start of Year 10 on July 1st, I would like to thank them for their unending work to make sure our students achieve.

Year 10

The year 10 examinations are in full flow at the moment and the feedback is that the boys are conducting themselves admirably.   Even though the examinations are internal they are set under strict official external examination rules and regulations.  The boys will enjoy their summer break that much more after a full week of examinations and it will be well deserved as the vast majority of the boys have had a great year and are progressing well in preparation for their very important external examinations next year.

Mr Ramage, our key stage 4 manager, has finalised the preparations to enable our year 10 boys to go to Pepperwood Paintballing Centre for the mornings of the 1st- 3rd July 2013, inclusive.  This is our way of recognising and rewarding, in a positive way, all the hard work the boys have done this year.

Post 16

Appointment of Dan (Head boy), Tim, Bryan, Liam (Deputy Head boys) as the mainstay of the Sixth form senior leadership team. They talked to the staff and helped out at awards evening. A very enthusiastic group of students who want the best for the College and want to personally achieve but are willing to give back.

University Open Day on Wednesday where all sixth formers will attend. This is an important day to find out all about University life, from course content to finance. All is freely available from Plymouth University - an opportunity not to be missed?

UCAS: the sixth form will now be preparing their UCAS applications for next year. I would advise that they prepare whether they are going to University or not as this provides the basis for any reference or application. The teachers at present are writing their references.

Dropping subjects: It is advisable that no subject is dropped until August when the results come out.

It has been a hard term but the A level exams have now ended. I wish all the students every success in their exams and hope that they succeed. I would like to personally thank them for all their hard work and I know that many students have personally thanked the teachers with gifts. I am proud of their achievements and they have all grown up to be responsible adults and hopefully for them have now completed this journey within the St. Boniface’s College.

Mr. Tew

St. Boniface's College Blog for week beginning 17th June 2013

Hello once again all,

Another very busy week here at the College with the majority of our Year 11 students taking their final GCSE Examination – there were many relieved and happy student faces in the College. The students have been a real credit to themselves, their families and the College over their most stressful weeks and I would like to thank every single one of them. I hope that they get the grades that reflect their hard work.

Monday is photograph day with all pupils having their portraits updated for use within the College.

On Wednesday we have our Key Stage 3 Awards evening, starting at 6pm in the College hall - another opportunity to demonstrate how proud we are of the pupils. Please do come along to support.

On Friday we have our College Sports Day and we are trying something a bit different this year with all pupils being encouraged to get involved in some kind of sporting activity as well as the more talented.

The G&T Computer Science event, Code Skool, on the 13/6/13 was a great success!
5 Year 8 pupils spent the day at Plymouth University’s  School of Computing and Mathematics and were in competition with 3 other local schools. They were given the challenge to create a website and embed a game on to it to teach young people about online safety on social networking sites. They were able to utilise each other’s skills and, with the guidance of the University’s computing students, write their website and game using code. They won the award for ‘Best Team’ and a £10 ITunes voucher each!
Well done Keenan, Jack, Matthew, Win and James!

C S Redfern (G&T Coordinator)

The music department played host to several primary school visitors last week – all appeared to be enjoying themselves!

Year 7

Year 7 have continued their hard work and effort this week. We are going to be celebrating their achievements in a special celebration assembly scheduled for the end of June, where students will be presented with various pastoral certificates, including Head of Faculty, Head of Year and Tutor awards. This will be in addition to the Academic Awards Evening (June 19th) and will celebrate rather the effort and enthusiasm seen by the tutor team throughout the year.

A special mention this week goes to Toby and Urban who are going to an awards evening where they will receive awards on behalf of their football team - Railway Beacon, who were runners up in the Warspite Cup this season. Toby has also been selected for Plymouth Youth Football Team, a great achievement. More football news, Callum has won another football tournament  – he also got top goal scorer of the match, well done Callum!

In other news, Harry in 7V is raising money for the British Legion by selling raffle tickets around school and Matthew raised £200, on his own, for his rugby club (Stonehouse sharks).  I believe that this was achieved through completion of a marathon to raise the money, so I think that deserves a big well done!

I mentioned in last week’s blog that our assembly was presented by Miss Heduvan on the theme of CAFOD. On Saturday, there was a celebration held in Hyde Park in London to support the “IF Campaign” presented by Myleene Klass. The assembly with year 7 about CAFOD’s IF Campaign, was very thought provoking and during period one on Wednesday of last week, Year 7 took part in a photograph on the field spelling out the word “IF”. The photograph was sent to CAFOD and appeared on their website, http://www.cafod.org.uk/Campaign/Take-action-today/The-Big-IF2 (We are photo 16). We also were “retweeted” on Twitter and thanked personally by Myleene Klass for our support! So year 7 are now officially famous!

We have the school photographs on June 17th. Please ensure that your son is looking smart and with that in mind, can I remind you please that all students should be adhering to the hair and uniform requirements. I appreciate your cooperation with this.

Some important dates for the Year 7 diary;

June 17th – School photographs – remember to look smart!

June 19th – KS3 Awards Evening – please come along to celebrate with us, the achievements of our great year group.

June 21st Sports Day – all day event in school please sign up with your tutor to take part in the events.

July 1st – New Academic Year for all students. (Year 7 will progress into Year 8 and Mr B. Tucker will be the new Head of Year).

July 5th – PTFA Quiz Night! 7.30pm. Please come along and support our event – Mr MacCormick is our resident Quizmaster for the evening! It should be great fun.

I wish you all a lovely week! – Miss Beales, Head of Year 7.

Year 8

Once again, year 8 enjoyed another jam packed curriculum enrichment week, with many different activities ranging from surfing, farming, sports, and cookery. Miss Sanford tells me the group that attended Seale Hayne Agricultural College, were a credit to the school.

Students are currently engaged in selecting their sports teams for the annual sports day event, which this year will be held on the school premises, it is the intention that all of the year group will participate in one or another activity.

Students from 8B this week presented an assembly in line with the G8 conference and CAFOD on the topic of food for everyone, showing support from the schools  Christian community, highlighting important issues around world hunger.

Following consultations with the heads of English and maths, a number of academic group changes have been made for the new academic year starting July 1st.  Although change can be unsettling for some students, I am confident that the new class placements assigned will be the best to enable students to achieve or exceed their potential.

This Wednesday 19th June is the KS3 awards evening where a number of the year group will receive certificates and awards in recognition of their efforts over the last 12 months. Refreshments will be available prior to the ceremony, and I look forward to meeting many of you there, where we can celebrate the hard work of our students.

Year 9

The adjusted timetable continues to offer students in Year 9 the opportunity to focus on their core subjects and their option choices, whilst exploring Finance, Health, Citizenship, Community, Enterprise, and Identity through a ‘challenge-based’ program on the IT system.

I’m looking forward to seeing Year 9 parents at our Information evening on Tuesday June 25th starting at 6pm in the Main Hall.  The event will include an overview of the next two years, introductions to the faculty leaders for the year group, and the launch of the SIMS Learning Gateway for parents.

In addition, each of your son’s GCSE teachers will be in attendance, offering specific guidance on their courses.  As this is a formal school event, students should attend in full uniform.

Year 10

The successful work experience the year 10 boys recently undertook has been commented on in glowing terms by their employers, the vast majority of whom were very impressed by the quality of the boys work and their general attitude.  Below are just a few, among the numerous amazing comments, we have received from delighted local employers.  Waterstones, wrote that Ben was 'a real asset to the team and we would employ him if a vacancy arose', Bluestone 360 Ltd wrote that Michael 'worked on a live brief from a client band he worked professionally to deliver a credible end result that we will put forward as part of our presentation.  Well done Michael. Keyham Barton Primary School wrote that Myles 'carried out many tasks efficiently and accurately'. Congratulations to all the boys for making their parents and the school proud.

A number of our year 10 students carry out charity/voluntary work and we want to formally thank them for their efforts.
Josh : helps out at the Devon Raptor Rescue Centre in Outland Road.

Nick : working towards his Duke of Edinburgh bronze award and works weekly with the local Cubs group in Bere Alston and  and helps with 'Operation Sunshine' which is a Christian charity that ships clothes & practical goods out to Zimbabwe, Zambia & Tanzania.

Lewis : works voluntarily with the Carnival Committee in Tamerton Foliot helping to prepare & organise events and marshall parades. Monthly/ alternate months. May Carnival in Tamerton Foliot being one the biggest local carnivals.

Year 12

             SPORTS DAY.

Help me, Lord, to discover the talents I have been given, and not to let them lie unused but to make the best use of them both for myself and for others. May sport help to bring out the best in people, teaching us the lessons of commitment and co – operation, of fairness and appreciation. May sports, hobbies and interest help me to develop my personality that I may be renewed and re – created in your image and likeness.

Amen
