Hello
once again and thank you for taking the interest in the College -
Last
week saw a very successful post 16 preparation evening with year 11 pupils and
parents finding out what St. Boniface’s has to offer them. It was lovely to see
the hall packed out, I cannot remember it busier for such an event. Apologies
if you needed to stand and I do hope that you found the evening of use. Please
remember no option blocks for year 12 studies have yet been formulated – we are
interested in what the pupils say they want to study and will then form the
option choices around what they are asking for.
Another
huge thank you to all those involved in the post 16 Parent/Teachers evening
last week. There was a lovely atmosphere in the hall.
I am extremely interested in finding out your thoughts about how
we as a College are doing since
September 2013. As such could I ask you to please take 2 minutes to
complete the survey that can be found at the address below, 12 questions only
based on the Ofsted parent view approach:
We
are all looking forward to the start of advent and please remember our Carol
Service at 4pm on Sunday 8th December at St. Peter’s Church. It
would be wonderful to fill the Church and sing carols together. The St.
Boniface’s College Christmas Science lecture is also one not to miss – Monday 9th
December at 7 in the school hall. Mr Glanville will once again be wowing us
with miraculous feats of scientific daring!

As
you may be aware the College is looking to develop the reading and
literacy skills of all KS3 students. We would like to invite you to join
us in helping students to read. We would like volunteers to come to the
library once a week to hear some of our students read.

Year 7 –
Miss Beales
With only 15 days left, we are creeping closer to Christmas!
Some fantastic news to report for year 7 this week. Jack in 7K has
received 20 merits in maths alone since joining the college in September! What
an absolutely brilliant achievement, well done Jack! Another special mention to
George in 7K who received “Man of the Match” at AFC Plmypton last weekend. Well
done George. It’s important to celebrate achievements outside of the college as
well as those during the school day. Please ask your sons to tell me, or their tutor,
of their successes so that we can all celebrate!
This week we had an assembly by 7V. Thank you for all that took
part. A thought provoking and reflective message as always.
If you haven’t heard already, 7G are currently holding a dog
beauty competition, titled “Dazzling Dogs!”, where students have been bringing
in photographs of their pets to compete for the title of most beautiful dog!
Well done to the students of 7G and Mrs Printy for organising this!
To ensure the extremely high standards that Year 7 continue to
demonstrate, please can I ask parents to make a note of the following;
·
Students should adhere to the hair and uniform requirements at all
times. I hope that the boys have managed to have suitable haircuts over half
term! Please also ensure that the correct outer wear garments are being used as
the weather starts to turn towards winter. Students should only be wearing
black or navy blue coats, thank you.
·
Mobile phones should not be on during the school day. They should
be switched off and in bags so that learning is not disturbed.
·
Home learning should be completed for all subjects in a timely
manner. Please can parents insist on checking planners and guiding the students
with organisation.
·
Please can parents ensure their son has a reading book in his bag
every day to support our reading scheme. This is to further help and improve
literacy standards whereby all students will undertake 30 minutes of silent
reading each day.
Just a final reminder, I hope you all received the email I sent
earlier in the week regarding this year’s Carol Service. The Carol Service for
the Community of St Boniface’s College and the Year 7 students and parents will
be held at St Peter’s Church on Sunday 8th December at 4pm. Year 7
students will be singing in the service, therefore attendance by all students
in Year 7 is imperative please. We also welcome you along to the service
and to enjoy some mulled wine and mince pies after in our new catering
facility.

Year 8
Well
done to the basketball team who won both their games on Thursday against All
Saints and Ridgeway. I was lucky enough to be there as the driver of the
minibus and what a performance across both games! Stunning basketball for a
group of boys who have only been together for a couple of weeks. Well done to
all.
Special
mention must go to Harry R in Year 9 who coaches the squad under the watchful
eye of Mr James and Mr Greenway. Harry demonstrates maturity beyond his years
in the way he directs and encourages the younger boys. Brilliant!
Mentoring
day last week seems to have been a great success. I know the mentors enjoyed
the opportunity to meet with parents and carers for the first formal time. We
really do look forward to the journey towards Year 11 with both you, as
parents, and your son. Please use the mentoring system if you have any academic
questions about your son’s progress.
Good
luck to the following Year 8 students: Harry Mc has a regional football
tournament over the weekend involving cadets from several services; Jonathan N.
takes his Grade 5 clarinet exam on Tuesday.
Congratulations
to all the boys who have gained postcards and merits this week (too many to
mention individually here!). Of special note, is Matthew V’s Drama postcard.
He’s very happy with this! Well done too, to Denver B who tells me that he has
been recognised as the strongest and fastest swimmer in his club’s age-group.
His favourite stroke is the butterfly!
Finally,
if you need any gardening advice, speak to Henry M in 8V. I’ve seen photos of
the vegetables that Henry has grown and they are fantastic!
Year 9
It only seems like yesterday that the boys were in
year 6 and coming to an open evening to make their choice of secondary school
for the next 5 years and now here we are ½ way through their compulsory
schooling and making choices for their future GCSE’s.
This week the boys were given a form - a straw poll
- to gauge their interest and the popularity of certain courses based on their
choices. At this time the choices are not final, the idea behind this is a
timetabling issue to try and avoid possible clashes with the most popular
subjects to and ensure that as many boys as possible will be able to follow
their desired courses next year – YR10.
The boys will be given further guidance before making
their final choices after Christmas in the form of talks, and an Options
evening where parents are also actively
encouraged to attend and you can talk to
course leaders and discuss subject content. The provisional date for this
evening is January 14th 2014.

Year 10
Year 10 took part in the trip to VUE
cinema this week to help them with a fire drill. The boys were a credit to the
school and were rewarded with a private screening of Troy 2. We have been
invited back in February to help again!
In assembly this week we sang Gary
Barlow's new number followed by the classic 1984 Do They Know It's
Christmastime by Band Aid. Well done singers.
In the run up to Christmas we look
forward to welcoming physics teacher Mr Polson to the year 10 team as we say a
heartfelt farewell to Mr Smart this term.
Year 11 Mr
Redfern
Last week saw the boys complete their mock
examinations. The boys as usual,
conducted themselves admirably. Mrs Wills, our Art teacher here at
Bonnies, particularly wanted to point
out how the boys sitting their mock Art exam conducted themselves. She was full of praise and admiration with
their attitude and conduct, which is always nice to hear. As head of year 11 I’d like to take this
opportunity to thank Mrs Gimblett and her team of invigilators for all their
hard work and professionalism in setting everything up and monitoring the
proceedings so smoothly. Thank you to Mr
McKenna as well, in his role as HMS Heroes Lead
for organising a group of seven HMS Heroes boys in year 11 that have a mother or father in the
services, to go paintballing at
Sparkwell on the 5th of December 2013. I’m sure they will have a brilliant
time.
It was great to see so many year 11 boys attend the
6th form opening evening last Thursday night. The atmosphere was excellent and the boys
looked genuinely enthused with what next year can offer them at St Boniface’s
College.
Post 16
This week has been a very good week
for the sixth form. Many activities have taken place focussing on academic
performance and enrichment.
Last Friday was mentoring day where
your sons mentor went through the targets and formulated an action plan. Some
students have not completed this and need to contact their tutor immediately.
Last Tuesday was our sixth form
parents evening where an opportunity existed to meet your teachers and get
individual feedback in order to improve. If you have not yet contacted your
teachers then email me or your son’s teachers and we will speed up the process.
It is important that all parties are communicating in order to achieve success.
On Wednesday our sports leaders went
into primary schools to teach our younger students how to coach.
On Thursday our Lower Sixth students
went to Learn2Live at the Pavilions. A hard hitting event for all Lower Sixth
students, highlighting responsibility, and the need to act responsibly.
On Thursday our Art and Photography
students also went to a special taster day with Plymouth University. A unique
day with our partner university to explore all the future possibilities,
